The poems were lovely. Now we know how to make origami boats at home. Year 4 are FANTASTIC!

Do you know a lovely poem about several different kinds of boats? It’s called Cargoes by John Masefield. This would be a good poem to learn with a group of friends perhaps? I hope you like it.

    Cargoes
Quinquireme of Nineveh from distant Ophir,
Rowing home to haven in sunny Palestine,
    With a cargo of ivory,
    And apes and peacocks,
Sandalwood, cedarwood, and sweet white wine.

Stately Spanish galleon coming from the Isthmus,
Dipping through the Tropics by the palm-green shores,
    With a cargo of diamonds,
    Emeralds, amythysts,
Topazes, and cinnamon, and gold moidores.

Dirty British coaster with a salt-caked smoke stack,
Butting through the Channel in the mad March days,
With a cargo of Tyne coal,
    Road-rails, pig-lead,
Firewood, iron-ware, and cheap tin trays.

Thank you so much Jacob’s granny! I learnt this poem when I was at school and I can still remember it to this day. I loved learning it because it has a real rhythm and life of its own. I have always loved the vision of the cheap tin trays. Right Year 4, let’s learn it!

  5. Jacob's Granny says:

Children, have you discovered what a Quinquereme is? It’s a lovely word to say and I think you’ll be quite surprised when you find out what it is!

  6. gwebber says:

Three points to the first person to find it out!

    boat

  9. gwebber says:

Thank you! Three points go to Elisha for the exact definition. Eliza gets two points for saying boat. Well done girls.

  10. Jacob's Granny says:

Good research skills. It’s just as Elisha says. Quinque = five in Latin and Reme = Oar So, guess what, it’s a ship powered by five banks of oars.

  12. Jacob's Granny says:

I will post a picture of a quinquereme on the blog just as soon as I find out how we upload photos.
